DirectBuy was semi-good in the early 90's...

... before internet shopping was prevalent. I bought a new house and recouped the membership cost on hardwood flooring alone (I should add that the membership was a wedding present - I paid nothing). After that, not much else was a deal. Sure, a washing machine might cost $800 with them and $1000 at the cheapest brick and mortar store, but the wait would be two months. It was a hassle. Some things like electronics were never cheaper with them. Their furniture was a big savings but the selection was ugly and crappy (unless you like Lazy Boy, etc...) Plus, you'd spend all your time going back and forth to real stores to look at stuff you saw there since Direct Buy is only catalog shopping. Also, returning stuff was not an option unless it arrived damaged. I finally let my membership expire about seven years ago because everything I wanted was cheaper through online stores. If you are newly married and basically have nothing, it might be worth it if you are buying a house like I did and adding flooring, cabinets, appliances, and other things not conducive to buying over the internet. Otherwise, don't even bother to suffer through the grueling sales pitch and run as fast as you can in the opposite direction. Oh yeah, did I mention they make you sign a contract the day of the sales pitch and won't let you go home and think about it (they take your information and won't let you come back if you don't sign up immediately). PLUS, they won't let you look through the catalogs or see pricing until you sign up and pay them. On second thought, anyone who treats someone like that doesn't even deserve to be in business. Avoid them like the plague.
